BONJOUR!

When I came back to my home after over a decade abroad, I had a greater appreciation for the Cahors appellation. I’ve made wine in other regions of France, New Zealand and the United States, and my vision for Cahors is one of hope and pride. My vineyards are HVE 3 certified (High Environmental Value level 3), a label in France that validates a respectful approach towards biodiversity, the environment and sustainable development for future generations. The wines I make are a reflection of our stunning terroir and a fresh, forward-looking & balanced style I enjoy. There’s more to my viticulture & wine-making philosophies, so I hope you join me in my journey and I hope to be part of yours.

My Story.

A locally-minded vigneron with a world traveler’s perspective, Lucien Dimani brings an indispensable combination of talent, skill, and experience to his family’s Cahors estate. His passion for both the land and the art of winemaking was passed down from his parents, Arnaldo and Monique Dimani, who founded Domaine Le Bout du Lieu over two decades ago.

Lucien was introduced to the intricacies of running a vineyard at an early age, and developed an appreciation for this under sung yet admirable home region of Cahors. After earning a degree in viticulture and enology from the Institut Rural de Vayres in Bordeaux in 2007, he gained a wealth of experience working abroad, which allowed him to bring a global point of view and fresh enthusiasm to the family business.

His first stint was in New Zealand, where he could contemporaneously pursue his love of playing rugby, his intent to learn English, and his desire to gain winemaking experience. Under the tutelage of mentors Allain Hedgeman (head winemaker for Mud House) and Matt Thompson, an acclaimed consultant, Lucien began to develop his winemaking worldview. Later, Lucien spent time closer to home in the Rhône Valley with his now-wife Eileen—an American with deep experience in both countries’ wine trades, who had been studying in Burgundy when they met—before traveling to the United States.

Tradition and Adaptability

Despite being in a new country, Lucien found work consulting at a winery called Afton Mountain Vineyards in Virginia’s Monticello AVA [Fun fact: the French began cultivating imported grapevines in Virginia in the 1600s]. There, he began to understand the vast chasm between the rigid winemaking philosophies he had learned in Bordeaux, and the audacious experimentalism of maverick American viticulture. Without the centuries-old winemaking traditions of their European brethren, the winemakers at Afton (and neighboring estates like King Family Vineyards, where Lucien found a mentor in fellow Frenchman Matthew Finot) were free to dabble in growing 14 different varieties among their 25 acres of vines. Lucien was promoted to Winemaker almost immediately, and, in his first vintage, earned the winery a gold medal at the Virginia Governor’s Cup.

After that eye-opening experience, Lucien and Eileen returned to Lucien’s family home, where he is now charged with leading Domaine Le Bout du Lieu into its next era, helping the estate continue to thrive, while remaining true to its historic roots.

Hope and Pride

Lucien’s progressive, sustainable, and optimistic approach to winemaking, combined with a deep commitment to craftsmanship, wonderfully embodies the philosophies passed down from generations prior. The family’s goal is to listen carefully to nature, help the vines express their very highest potential, and allow the terroir to shine through in every bottle of Domaine Le Bout du Lieu wine.

The family patriarch is old school—in the best possible way. At just six years old, Néné (short for Arnaldo) began working after school at the family farm and in the vineyards alongside his father, Louis, who did not wish for his children to follow in his footsteps as farmers. Yet, after studying the electronics mechanic trade and serving a mandatory French military stint, Néné settled down at his childhood home with his wife, Monique, in the picturesque village of Saint-Vincent-Rive-d’Olt, where he joined the local winemaking co-op and resumed his life among the vines.

At the co-op, he grew grapes to sell to local producers, including luxury goods tycoon Alain Dominique Perrin, who had hired renowned consultant Michel Rolland—which meant Néné quickly learned to meet (and exceed) the international winemaking superstar's exacting standards.

Néné and Monique founded Domaine Le Bout du Lieu in 2000, releasing their first official bottling—just four barrels—from the 2001 vintage. The pair have since dedicated their lives to producing their own fine wines from the highest quality Malbec grapes, and to passing down their passion for the terroir and tradition of Cahors to future generations.

Blood, sweat, and the dream of seeing the Cahors appellation shine in another Golden Age are what fuel Néné each day, and his unadulterated love for the local terroir has served as an inspiration to the next generation.

In addition to founding the winery, Néné has spent more than 30 years educating others about the importance of the Cahors appellation and its wine industry, and advocating for the region’s heritage, quality, and continuity.

A winemaker, mother of three, and partner in crime to Néné, Monique keeps the family’s estate running smoothly. It comes naturally to her—Monique’s ancestors have been in Saint-Vincent-Rive-d’Olt, cultivating the land and honoring France’s grape growing heritage, for more than five generations.

Devoted to her land and driven by her love of family, Monique embodies the idyllic, provincial lifestyle of the southern French countryside. Do-it-yourself is not a trend for her, but an inspiration—a beautiful, sustainable way of life.
